I just got back from seeing Lost in Translation with my mom. It's kind of funny that the only person I have to go to quiet character-driven movies with is my mom. Amanda was always up for any movie; she called while I courteously had my phone off. She's back from Georgia and she had something to tell me and couldn't remember her own not-cell phone number. The way she stammered, turning her digits into the words "oh just e-mail me," just about broke my heart.
I think it was partly the movie, though. I wanted to stay inside that movie forever, and not just because it was set in Japan.
I seem to relate to moments, or to atmosphere, when I see movies. That's why when I blurt out movie quotes, they rarely make sense. Again, Amanda would usually know not only what I was referencing but what I was feeling that made me quote the quote... mrr.
I have been pretty lonely for a couple weeks and Lost in Translation is sort of a lonely movie. I could have watched Bill Murray do nothing for hours. (I guess I kind of did, but I meant more hours.) I'm listening to the Air song from the soundtrack on repeat and wishing I had more music that sounded just like it.
Amanda would totally have known what I was talking about when I mentioned that they changed the voice of the Guitar Freaks announcer in the arcade scene, and I wonder why. I could have looked at Amanda when the Pop'n'music guy went all out. Who am I ever going to find that I can have POP'N'MUSIC moments with?
I'm sure I'm just tired from a busy weekend. And I don't know why my mind decided it was Angst Day. But yeah, see Lost in Translation if it's playing near you.
It really made me want to have somebody who wasn't my mom that I could bring to a second viewing.
It'd been ages since a movie affected me. Feels good.
